LAIRD HARPER/Taranaki Daily News

I vividly remember the first time I ate a scone. I was in Starbucks, I was 13 and it was a maple oat scone with icing. I fell in love with scones after that first bite, and I still enjoy eating them from time to time since. I’ve passed on the Starbucks scone after I discovered it contains a whopping 490 calories. It makes me wonder how many calories this scone from New Zealand contains. After all, it broke the world record for the largest scone ever! More after the jump.

In the small Taranaki town of Eltham in New Zealand, the town’s business association baked the world’s largest scone, according to the New Zealand Herald. It weighed just over 264 pounds (120kg). The previous record about 132 pounds (60kg). The scone weight was actually doubled!

The scone was baked in a purpose-built oven and it took seven hours to cook! It makes me wonder how tasty the scone was.

I do know of a quite a few scone recipes that are supposed to be delicious. If you’re thinking of making some scones, ones that are a little lighter than 264 pounds, here a few delicious recipes!
